Rozhovor s LAB
Již tuto sobotu se na akci Syllabus v pražském klubu Cross představí věhlasný portugalský projekt LAB. Při té příležitosti jsme s ním připravili krátký rozhovor.
Plech: First off, I was wondering what psytrance artists you would label as your all time favorites.
LAB: Speaking only of psytrance (because I like other music a lot as well, like Noisia, and some more dnb stuff), my all time favorites are: Claw, CPC, Orestis, Wing Ping, and Gappeq. Old Psykovsky rather than Orestis, perhaps. When I started on psytrance I started with the harder stuff, Russian stuff from 2003 and on. Fungus Funk, Psyfactor, Furious, Psykovsky… So the only happy music in psytrance that I like is Infected Mushroom. Before all that, I was into house music, and lounge/break/jazzy stuff.
Plech: How about anything non-electronic?
LAB: Until the electronic age hit me, I was on metal, goth / death metal stuff. Like Moonspell, Samael, Cradle of Filth. I was on metal for a very long time, but I was very young.
Plech: How old are you now?
LAB: I’m 27.
Plech (via Boom): What equipment do you use for the production of your music?
LAB: The favorite equipment would definitly be the Nord Modular, a monster machine that can achieve amazing and infinite results, although i use many more, like Korg Ms-2000r, Roland Sonic Cell, Yamaha TG-33 and every piece of hardware i can put my hands on!!
Plech: Did you ever learn to play any live instruments?
LAB: Not in schools, but I can play some guitar and percussion. My father taught me, he was good at it.
Plech: Was your father a musician?
LAB: Not officially releasing anything. But he was a great musician for sure. He played the guitar and percussion.
Plech: So he inspired you to make music? And does he approve of the music you produce?
LAB: I’ve loved music since I was very young. I was very much into anything that had to do with music. My father approves more of the Unikorp project. LAB is too hard for him.
Plech: Are you planning to shift over to your new project more? Is LAB slowly going to die away, or will it keep up the same pace as until now? Do you ever feel that you're getting close to having used up your imagination, your ideas, or do you believe you've still got a lot to say in the future?
LAB: LAB is the main project, and has much, much more to give. It’s the project that I’m planning to work on a lot more. Unikorp is just my other side, but I quickly get tired of producing it, it doesn’t give me as much of a “thrill” as LAB, if you know what I mean. I feel that my imagination will never end, nor my ideas or learning process, so you can expect me to make a lot more in the future, I see a long road still ahead of me. Every day I have enthusiasm in what I do. I work for a company a few hours a day, but music is my main thought at all times.
Plech: What artist have you enjoyed working with the most?
LAB: Simian! My mate in the project Braintrain, and the guy who I made my first psytrance bass with!
Plech: I love Simian's track Cold Silence! The snare drum is deadly… I can see similarities between your music and his.
LAB: Sure, we learned together. He’s one of my best friends. We lived together for some years.
Plech: Are you looking forward to your gig in Prague?
LAB: Yes very much! Can't wait to get there! The previous night I tested my dj set at a party, similar to the one i'll play there, it went out great :)
Plech: Thank you very much for your time, and see you here!
